Approval workflow doesn’t send email

Several days spent to fight against a custom approval workflow that does not send any email, even if the Windows or SharePoint log say nothing about this problem.
This workflow comes in a wsp file written by someone else and now I’m updating the SahrePoint 2007 farm, in which it was installed, to a SharePoint 2010 installation.
Thanks to RUSSELL MCCLOY blog (http://www.russellmccloy.com/2008/06/approval-workflow-does-not-send-email.html), now mail works properly. My “Send email when ownership is assigned” option was already active (from the SharePoint upgrade) and also using SPM (http://www.codeplex.com/spm) all seemed to be right, but only when I’ve disabled and then enabled the task-list option, the send email started to work.
